ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS - MYTHS, FACTS AND INFORMATIONS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Low-calorie sweeteners are also known as; artificial sweeteners, sugar substitutes or non-nutritive sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners are synthetic sugar substitutes but may be derived from naturally occurring substances including herbs or sugar itself. They can be used to sweeten food and drinks for less calories because they replace sugar. The sweetening power of most low-calorie sweeteners is at least 100 times more intense than regular sugar.

There are six approved artificial sweeteners for our diabetics:

  1. 1.Acesulfame potassium
  2. Aspartame
  3. Saccharin
  4. Sucralose
  5. Neotame
  6. Advantame

The benefit of artificial sweeteners is that it may help in weight control and Diabetes since it reduces carbohydrate (sugar) intake. Artificial sweeteners may be a good alternative to sugar if you have diabetes. Artificial sweeteners generally don’t raise blood sugar  levels because they are not carbohydrates. They also don’t contribute to tooth decay and cavities. Critics of artificial sweeteners say that they cause a variety of health problems including cancer. This theory was disproved by National Cancer Institute and other agencies which found no scientific evidence that any of the artificial sweeteners approved for use cause cancer or other health problems. Numerous research studies confirm that artificial sweeteners are generally safe in limited quantities even for pregnant women.

is there a limit on the use of sweeteners per day? We see a lot of bakeries and stores selling sweets and cakes claiming that its sugarfree. I believe that the quantity of the swetteners used in such products are on the higher side. Pls confirm
